No Eurail trip through Germany is complete without a visit to Cologne. When you arrive by train follow my tips and you’re sure to have lots to see and do.

The City Gates – Only three of the twelve city gates from the mediaeval city are still used today. They are named the Severinstor, the Eigelsteintor and the Hahnentor.

The city hall- This city hall was built in 1330 with several sections being added in the 15th and 16th century. During WWII it suffered major damage, but was restored in the 70s and is worth a visit to see.

The Cologne cathedral- This cathedral stands tall with its two spires at 157 m. in height. It is the most famous architectural monument and largest cathedral in Germany, taking an incredible 632 years to build.

The Cologne gardens- These fantastic gardens were originally landscaped in 1863. In 1914 a botanical garden was added and the site was destroyed during WWII. After being completely restored, it now houses more than 12,000 species. The Cologne Zoo is located across for the gardens as well.

The 4711 House- This new Gothic head office of the famous “Eau de Cologne” is located opposite the opera in Glockengasse. The number “4711″ refers to old house-numbering system adopted by the French occupying power in 1795.

Cologne Shopping Passages – This city has few shopping areas that are definitely worth mentioning. The Neumarkt Passage, located at Neumarkt, and the Olivandenhof, located between Neumarkt and Breite Strasse. Here you are going to find stores displaying fashion and food, along with taverns and pubs to enjoy.

Herbrandstrasse 21 Beer Garden- Also known as “Herbrand’s”, this 12,000 occupancy beer garden is perfect place to dance, drink or just relax in a perfect setting.

Phantasialand- This amusement park is located outside of Cologne and is a great day trip for families. It hosts a wide array of attractions for all ages and draws millions of visitors a year. It is open between April and November.

As you can see Cologne is a sure choice when traveling by Eurail pass through Germany. I hope these tips get you excited and help you plan your trip.
